What’s Under the Shingles?
Under what you can see of your roof is a system that has been installed to protect your entire home. This includes decking.
For most this is actually part of the original framing of your home, but with roof wear and tear, leaks and moisture, the decking may require replacement. Ridgeline Roofing Company will make sure that every sheet of your decking is ready for the new roof and will replace any sections that are not.
Leak barriers are installed on the decking to make sure that tiny gaps between the plywood are sealed.
If it has been a while since you have had a roof replaced, you may not have moisture barriers installed on your roof. Today, every roof has this added to protect the decking and your home from leaks and moisture damage. The entire decking is covered with these barriers.
The edges of the roof are covered with special roofing tiles called “Starter Strips” that will give the roof an even appearance.
At the bridge of the roof / the very top of the slope, attic ventilation strips are added, and the cap shingles will go over those. This allows the attic ventilation to breathe but will keep water out.
Finally, each of the things that pierce your roof will need leak guards. Many people do not realize that beyond your chimney and any utility line poles your roof has holes for ventilation for toilets and sinks and even your exhaust system for your kitchen ranges.
Each of the holes in your roof for these “pipes” and lines will require special rings to prevent water from seeping under the roof.
“Recently, I had my roof replaced by Ridgeline. I can say that Brian was true to his word when everything was complete. He was very clear about the entire process and any questions that I had about my insurance claim, he was able to answer. The roof was replaced in a day and it looks great.” – Ridgeline Athens client
Metal Roofing
Why choose a metal roof?
Metal roofs have undergone a lot of change in the last few years. While they are more expensive on the front end, they offer loads of benefits that may make the expense now worth it.
Durable – A metal roof can last for 40-70 years. This more than doubles the life expectancy of a traditional asphalt roof
Environmentally Friendly – Metal roofs are good for the environment. Not only can they be produced from recycled materials, they can almost always be installed over your tradition roof. The prevents the old asphalt tiles from heading to the landfill.
Quiet – An underlay of plywood ends the concerns of noise from rain/hail hitting the roof and echoing into the home or office.
Energy Efficient – Metal roofs can have a dramatic impact on your home or business heating and cooling bills. A metal roof, with the installation of the underlay provides additional insulation for your building.
Attractive – Metal roofs can also come in a variety of designs including wood, slate, tile and standing seam vertical panels, to name a few.
Lightweight – Metal Roofs are lightweight, usually 66% lighter than asphalt and 75% lighter than slate, concrete or clay. Metal provides a fire safety Class A rating and is resistant to wind up to 150 m.p.h. If properly installed and maintained, metal roofs can last the life of the home. They are extremely durable and provide long-lasting curb appeal as they resist algae, mildew, insects and do not rot. These roofs are environmentally friendly as they reflect radiant heat and can be recycled.

Care and Maintenance of a Metal Roof
Unlike asphalt roofs, the metal roof is durable and meant to be washed gently with water or pressure washer over time. Every metal roof has a factory installed coating to protect it from algae and sun damage.
Washing the roof, however gently, and the natural damage over time of the sun can gradually erode the protective coating. The good news is that new coats can be applied to protect the roof for additional decades or life.
You will want to ask about the coating on the metal roof you select. Metal roofs are coated with either zinc (galvanized) or a mixture of aluminum and zinc (galvalume). The coating comes in different grades and even thicknesses which will affect the number of years between coatings you may need.
